RVC Students' Union Clubs and Societies.
The RVC Alumni Fund offers match funding to help clubs and societies at the RVC. Together, we empower students to make a meaningful impact in their community. Never have these social interactions been more important.
RVC Students’ Union clubs and societies help to provide the best possible student experience for our students and support a healthy study-life balance. After an enormously challenging period, it’s more clear than ever just how vital these clubs are to our students’ wellbeing.
Student Small Animal Veterinary Society
Heather Durkin, SSAVS President, explains how they're helping students gain practical skills...
'The SSAVS hosted a raffle fundraiser this year to raise funds for upcoming practicals and events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many students missed crucial practicals and skill development, so we found it especially important to bring these events back this year. With a hugely successful raffle that sold over 800 tickets, the society organised a dental extraction practical as their first in-person event since the pandemic.
'This event allowed students to develop skills in small animal dentistry, utilising state-of-the-art equipment to perform complicated dental extractions and regional nerve blocks using fox and rabbit cadavers.'
'Future plans include ultrasound practicals and a symposium, to allow students to interact in person and network with their colleagues.Thank you again to the ACT for your continued support of RVC Students.'
12 hour hockey match raises
£1,388
RVC Hockey Club
This Spring, the RVC Hockey Club took on the mammoth task of playing a 12 hour hockey match to raise funds for Dementia UK and the RVC Hockey Club. Rebecca Wilkinson, RVCHC Charity Secretary tells us what happened...
'Within the first hour there had been so many goals we had to stop keeping count! We were absolutely spoilt for choice with subs as so many people were keen to get on and play. The support throughout the day was incredible and we would have really struggled without people there to boost morale. A big thank you to everyone who came to cheer us on including RVCRFC, RVC Netball and RVCWRFC. We also had a few old Hockey boys pop in to have a quick run about and it was great to see them again.
'It really was a huge team effort and testament to the RVC’s community spirit with support also from the Sports and Wellbeing Centre, Estates and Events.'
'With 15 minutes left before the 8pm finish line, everyone joined the pitch and dug deep to play for the last little bit. The last goal of the day was scored by George Robinson and it was quite a beauty indeed as he smacked it to the back of the goal. As we counted down the last 10 seconds everyone was still as committed and excited as at the beginning – although much more exhausted! Recovery refreshments in the Buttery after were well in order. Everyone played amazingly well all day and I am so proud of everyone’s enthusiasm and dedication.
'This event raised an incredible £1,388 with 60% going to Dementia UK and 40% to RVCHC funds! The RVC Alumni Fund agreed to match the donations for the Club up to another £500 and we are hugely grateful for this. Thank you for your support!'
'With the Club funds, we intend to buy a new Captains board to be placed in the Buttery and be engraved with recent Ladies 3rd XI captains’ names. The money will also go towards pitch hire for training and matches, buying new equipment such as goalie kits and will allow the club to put on more events as needed. We would also like to thank everyone involved with the planning of this event, such as the SAWC staff, Estates and Events.'
'Thank you for generously matching our fundraising. In November, we took part in a Strava running challenge running over 300 miles. Raising over £1400, everyone did an incredible job of toughing out the crazy November weather! The money raised helps fund our weekly practices and transportation for away games. Our club can now afford to buy a much-needed new match kit too! Everyone is beyond thrilled, and we cannot thank you enough.'
