SUPPORT FOR PERSONAL PCS, LAPTOPS AND SMART DEVICES
It is recommended that you use a laptop or PC for studying at home and assessments, these devices should be equipped with a microphone and camera. Find out more about the recommended IT setup here.
The IT network of the Royal Veterinary College is based primarily around Microsoft technologies and student-use computers in the College will be running Windows 10 and Office 2016 during the 2022-23 academic year. We recommend the following browsers: Chrome from Google; Firefox from Mozilla; Edge from Microsoft; Safari from Apple. Please check your browser is up to date as this is important to maximise security when accessing the internet. See here for further IT setup details.
The College offers Microsoft’s Office 365 and Student Advantage programme which allows students with an RVC email account to run Office 365 on up to five different Windows or Apple Mac computers.
You can also run Office ‘Mobile’ for Android or iPhone on five devices. Instructions for installing office 365 (on up to 5 devices) can be found at: https://www.rvc.ac.uk/lisd/ email. Instructions to self-configure equipment for wi-fi access can be found at: https://www.rvc.ac.uk/lisd/eduroam.
A fully licensed and updating anti-virus application must be installed on all computers (including Apple Mac devices) accessing the College network (not ‘demo’ or ‘time-limited’ versions of packages). If your laptop has Windows 8 or Windows 10 installed, the operating system will already have Windows Defender installed. This is Microsoft’s free Antivirus package, so you don’t need to install any other antivirus package.
In addition to this, we suggest that you install Malwarebytes onto your all of your computers (including Windows 8 and 10) in order to protect from Malware – the free version is sufficient: https:// www.malwarebytes.com/
Internet access and network support for student accommodation located off- campus (including Mary Brancker House) is the responsibility of the independent providers of these services who have their own terms and conditions and tariffs: see your tenancy/ accommodation agreement for details.
