Registering with a GP

International students

  • If studying on a Student Visa, the cost of your NHS healthcare is covered by your immigration health surcharge (IHS)
  • During Welcome Week and 5 Ways to BE Well induction, there will be online registration details for local GPs (Doctors) who welcome students living in local Halls or in local areas as new clients
  • Registration with a GP will ensure quick and easy access to local health services
  • Visit NHS services - NHS (www.nhs.uk) for the nearest NHS services including doctors and dentists in other areas. Click on the service you need and then enter your postcode.

Home students

  • Register with a local GP if you will be spending more weeks at your University address. That way, you can receive emergency care and access health services quickly while at University
  • During Welcome Week and 5 Ways to BE Well induction, there will be online registration details for local GPs (Doctors) who welcome students living in local Halls or in local areas as new clients

Bank accounts

  • Most banks require confirmation from the RVC that you are a student here which we can only provide once you have completed enrolment.
  • Try to book an appointment with your chosen bank as early as possible as they fill up quickly
  • You don’t need to wait until you enrol to book an appointment. Prior to your enrolment, we can provide a letter confirming that you are holding an offer with the RVC, if it is needed. Contact the Admissions Office if you require this.
  • See here for bank account advice and reviews.

Phone contracts

  • You need to have your UK bank account set up before you can get a phone contract
  • You should set up your phone contract as soon as you receive your UK bank account
  • If you are planning on using your own handset then make sure that the phone is unlocked from your carrier before you arrive in the UK.

Any Issues?

If you have any problems with registering for a GP, or setting up a bank account or phone contract, please get in touch so that we can help. It’s important that you have these set up within the first few weeks of your time here.
