Your application is in
– what happens next?

Waiting to hear back about your application can be just as nerve-racking as putting in the work to submit it. While our Admissions team is busily processing applications, you may have questions about what to expect once you’ve applied.

To help set your mind at ease, we’ve put together this information about what we’ll be doing with your application and when you might hear back from us, as well as some advice about what you can be doing in the meantime to help the process along.

Application responses:

With over 1,800 applications to our veterinary medicine courses received each year, please do not be concerned if it takes a while to receive a response from us. We know how much studying veterinary medicine means to our applicants and we want to ensure we commit enough time to thoroughly assess your application.

You can find out more about how we assess applications here and information about timings below.

Further information requests

We may contact you throughout October to let you know that we require further information in order to make a decision about your application or to assign your fee status. You will be told what information to provide and a deadline. Please reply promptly and by the deadline stated otherwise we cannot guarantee that your application will proceed.

Interview invitations

All of our Veterinary Medicine courses require an interview before we can make a final decision on your application. All of our interviews will take place in-person this year. If you are successful in being invited to interview we will give you more information about what to expect, what to bring and where to go in your invitation email. You can see more about how you can begin to prepare for an interview below.

  • We will begin to issue invitations to interview for US applicants who applied through VMCAS or UCAS on 25th October and expect this to be finished by 3rd November. Our US interview dates are as follows:

Wednesday 8th November – Saturday 11th November – Charlotte

Monday 13th – Tuesday 14th November – Dallas

Friday 17th – Sunday 19th November – Los Angeles

  • We will issue invitations to interview for UCAS applicants on a rolling basis from 15th November and expect this process to be complete by mid-December so don’t panic if you don’t hear from us until later in the year. Our UK interview dates run throughout late November to December and we will be interviewing Asian UCAS applicants in Singapore on Tuesday 9th – Thursday 11th January 2024.

Unsuccessful notifications

Our Veterinary Medicine courses are extremely competitive so unfortunately we are not able to take everyone through to interview stage. If we do have to let you know that your application has been unsuccessful we will provide a reason why, but are not able to provide any more detailed feedback on your application. We accept two applications per course, so if this is your first application you can try again another time.

Things for you to do:

There are a few things you can do while you’re waiting for our response….

Documents:

If you are invited to interview we will require you to upload certain documents to our applicant portal, so it is a good idea to ensure you have these to hand or have ordered replacements if you do not have the originals. The documents required are:

  • Passport – All applicants are required to submit a passport. If you are an international applicant but hold a UK or Irish passport please upload this one.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) certificates – If you apply through UCAS we will ask to see your GCSE or equivalent certificates. We do not accept statement of results. If you do not have your original certificates please request copies in good time.
  • Clinical and Non-Clinical work experience references – We require references to cover a total of 70 hours of work experience (paid or voluntary) in one or more veterinary practices and a total of 70 hours in one or more non-clinical working environments with live animals. If you do not yet have the full 70 hours of clinical experience please supply references for the hours you have worked so far. References must be signed, on headed paper, include the dates you worked and state the number of hours worked. You can see an example reference here. Please ensure you have contacted your referees to obtain references in good time.

Mitigating Circumstances:

If you feel that you have mitigating circumstances which need to be taken into account during the assessment of your application to the RVC, you need to complete a Mitigating Circumstances form in our applicant portal and supply supporting information. Please see www.rvc.ac.uk/mitigatingcircumstances for more information.

Please note - if you have previously emailed the Admissions Office about your mitigating circumstances you will still need to complete the form and upload your supporting evidence.

Questions:

If you have questions while we’re assessing your application please email myapplication@rvc.ac.uk and the team will be happy to help.

Changed your mind?

If you don’t want to wait for a decision or you change your mind about applying to the RVC, you can withdraw an application for one or more choices in UCAS Track (if applicable) or by emailing myapplication@rvc.ac.uk.
